> The unmixed precept means upholding the precept co-arising with concentration. Even though one maintains the rules of restraint, if one thinks of matters that break the precepts, it is called 'mixed'; when concentration-co-arising holds the mind, thoughts of desire do not arise; hence it is called 'unmixed'. As the Great Sūtra says: 'Even though one does not unite bodily with that woman, yet one speaks and jokes with her, hears the sound of bracelets outside the wall, or sees men and women chasing each other, these all defile the pure precepts.' The Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā says: 'Even though one restrains the act itself, yet causes a woman to wash, wipe, and massage oneself, speaks to and looks at her with an染心 \[infatuated mind\], or limits keeping the precepts to a certain number of days, or hopes for future wealth and joy and licentious ease in heaven—all these are called impure.' If one upholds the unmixed precept, one is entirely free of such thoughts.
