> Now we do not discuss the noble teacher, but specifically explain the ordinary teacher teaching others to settle the mind. Others are of two kinds: first, followers of faith; second, followers of the Dharma. The Sarvāstivādins explain that these two persons are at the rank of the path of seeing. Those who enter via hearing are 'followers of faith'; those who enter via contemplation are 'followers of the Dharma'. The Dharmaguptakas say: 'Their rank is in the preparatory stages. Those who see little of the Dharma for themselves and rely heavily on the power of hearing, and in the end must hear the Dharma to attain enlightenment, are called "followers of faith". Those who rely little on the power of hearing and see much of the Dharma for themselves, and in the end must reflect to attain enlightenment, are called "followers of the Dharma".'
