> Answer: All are due to causes and conditions of the two existences. If in the past there were seeds of gradual contemplation, and in the present they receive the rain of practice, they will arise sequentially. If in the past there were seeds of sudden contemplation, they will arise non-sequentially. If in the past there were indeterminate seeds, they will arise in a mixed manner. If in the past cultivation the numbers were complete, they will arise completely; if in the past cultivation the numbers were incomplete, they will arise incompletely. If one attained realization in the past, when it arises now it will be accomplished; if in the past one merely cultivated without realization, when it arises now it will not be accomplished. If past causes are strong, it arises now without cultivation; if present conditions are strong, it awaits cultivation before arising. If both past cause and present condition are skillful, dedicated toward the supreme path, its present arising will be beneficial; if poison was mixed into past causes and conditions, it will result in harm. Where the cause from which it arises is weak, it will not endure; where the cause from which it arises is strong, it will endure. From coarse and subtle settling up to the fourth dhyāna, one successively determines strength and weakness (and so on).
