> Regarding the wisdom illuminating phenomena and the wisdom illuminating principle, although wisdom is two, the two do not have distinct essences. The cognitive hindrance and ignorance likewise do not have two natures. Although there are two explanations, they are not two. Furthermore, as for the mind and wisdom being a hindrance: when one thoroughly examines, discriminative wisdom obstructs true reality, preventing the attainment of realizing wisdom; in this sense too, wisdom itself is the hindrance. Because conceptualization is eliminated and the mind is eliminated, there is the sense of severing wisdom. If one relinquishes discrimination, one moves directly toward the purification of the cognitive hindrance. Furthermore, since they are not separate entities, wisdom is also not severed. Therefore, the sūtra contains the words 'not losing merit.' The Śataśāstra cites the Buddha as saying: 'Do not fear merit, for it is an auxiliary path that should be practiced.' When people argue from a one-sided perspective, two paths of severing and non-severing arise; recognize that there is no contradiction, and do not generate biased clinging and disputes.
