> Third, applying the distinctive names to the common stages of the shared tradition: formerly it was said that "the third ground severs views", or it was said that "the fourth ground severs views", or it was said that "the sixth ground severs thought completely", or it was said that "the seventh ground severs thought completely". Now, examining these words: if one says that the third ground and fourth ground both sever views, this master does not understand the meaning of the shared teaching. Why is that? In the stages common to the three vehicles, they together enter uninterrupted samādhi, severing views without exiting or entering contemplation; how could one suddenly say that both the third and fourth grounds sever views? If one only takes the third ground as severing views, the fourth ground should sever thought. If one only takes the fourth ground as severing views, the third ground should not yet have severed views. If both grounds are used to sever views, is it done while exiting and entering contemplation, or without exiting and entering contemplation? If without exiting and entering contemplation, then there are not two grounds; if while exiting and entering contemplation, it is not the stage of severing views. Masters rescue their view by saying: "The sūtra says so." This master does not understand the sūtra's meaning.
