> As for the gate of neither emptiness nor existence: as the \*Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa\* explains, when Channa's mind became pliable and soft, the \*Nandikātyāyana Sūtra\* was to be spoken for him, and only by leaving existence and leaving non-existence could he attain the path. This contemplation can also break simple and compound views and the eighty-one \[grades of\] thought; entering emptiness from the provisional, it brings about the non-arising of delusion, wisdom, cause, effect, and so forth; this is the purpose of breaking down the provisional through the gate of neither existence nor non-existence in the Tripiṭaka teaching. One should know that Channa attained the Hinayana path; it must not be confused with the Mahāyāna middle way gate.
