> Now, as for embodying the provisionality of sensual desire to enter emptiness: the delusions of desire have nine grades, and as each and every grade arises, there are the three provisionalities. For instance, a woman has six desires: desire for color, desire for bodily form, desire for deportment and posture, desire for speech and voice, desire for softness and smoothness, and desire for human characteristics, distinguished as discussed elsewhere. If these six desires touch a practitioner, they can defile the sense organs, agitate the blood and pulses within, and manifest signs of greed outwardly. Even the first fruit has not yet severed them, so what of ordinary people? As for the residual habit of Nanda, when seeing a woman in a crowd, he would first converse with her, desire agitating his remaining habituation; so what of those with active proclivities? The Lotus Sūtra says: 'Do not seize upon the characteristics capable of giving rise to thoughts of desire in a woman's body to preach the Dharma to her.' If one seizes upon these characteristics, and the sense objects agitate the mental faculty so that a mind of desire arises, this is the provisionality of conditioned arising. When thoughts arise in unbroken succession so that action is finally carried out, this is the provisionality of continuity. Because the characteristics of a mind with desire differ from a mind without desire, this is the provisionality of relativity. The provisional is empty and unreal; one must never reckon it to be the principle.
