- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [8.10](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1911.8.10)

> However, the characteristics of defilement are so vast that they cannot be exhausted; if one distinguishes them in full, it impedes the approach of contemplation. The \*Lotus Sūtra\* says: 'For twenty years he was constantly ordered to shovel dung.' Dung is defilement, an impure phenomenon. If one discards it completely, one obtains the wage of one day; if one stops to distinguish whether it is much or little, one will never get the price. Now we contemplate the dung of defilements to seek the coin of wisdom, not desiring to distinguish the characteristics of view and thought.
