> Second, explaining the causes and conditions for the arising of defilements. Causes and conditions are threefold, as explained below. The characteristics of arising are four: deep but not sharp, sharp but not deep, both deep and sharp, neither deep nor sharp. The fourth phrase belongs to the general characteristics of delusion as karmic retribution, which are ordinarily continuous; hence it is said to be 'neither deep nor sharp'. The three phrases where the arousal is extraordinary belong to the characteristics of defilement surging forth. When they surge forth, they are deep, heavy, and cannot be stopped; when encountering objects, they increase even more and none can restrain them: this is the characteristic of 'deep'. When they arise repeatedly, and whenever they arise they are deep and heavy, this is called 'sharp'. 'Sharp but not deep' and 'deep but not sharp' can be understood by analogy with this.
