While still a householder, Upagupta had already attained the first fruit. Seeing a courtesan dismembered, he advanced and attained the third fruit. Leaving the household life and receiving the precepts, he attained the fourth fruit. When he preached the Dharma, Māra created obstacles; after Upagupta subdued him, \[Māra\] thereafter did not dare to visit Jambudvīpa. For each husband and wife he delivered who attained the fourth fruit, he would cast down a tally. The tallies were four inches long, and filled a sixteen-foot room; these tallies were used to cremate his body. The Dharma was transmitted to Dhītika.
