> "The Dharma was transmitted to Saṅghanandi." Saṅghanandi's realization of the Way was lofty and his transforming influence vast. He spoke a verse to test an arhat: "Born from the lineage of a wheel-turning king, / Yet able to enter nirvāṇa; / Neither a Buddha nor an arhat, / Nor a pratyekabuddha." The arhat entered samādhi and pondered it without understanding, so he ascended to the Tuṣita heaven to ask Maitreya. Maitreya said: "Clay placed upon a potter's wheel to make porcelain; the porcelain later breaks—this is neither the two vehicles nor a Buddha." Coming down, he saw Saṅghanandi and told it to him. Saṅghanandi said: "These are merely Maitreya's words."
