> "The Dharma was transmitted to Saṅghayaśas." Saṅghayaśas traveled to the seashore and saw a city; he went to the city to beg for food and spoke a verse: "Conditioned action is the foremost suffering; / Hunger is the foremost illness. / If one can see the reality of phenomena, / One attains the path of nirvāṇa." The master of the city thereupon invited him inside and gave him food. Then he saw two ghosts who had formerly been his daughters-in-law; because of their stinginess, I had made a vow: "May I see you receive your retribution." Further, he saw a city where people ate together in good order; when the meal was finished, they threw their bowls at one another, and fire arose to burn their bodies. Because they begrudged food to guests, they incurred this suffering.
