> From the line "Furthermore, the five conditions..." downward, it next harmonises the five conditions as being identical with the five repetitions. Where it first speaks of "branches and roots," arousing the aspiration guides practice, so branches necessarily depend on the root; practice fulfills vows, so the root necessarily requires branches. Though branches and root differ, together they form the tree of the path. Because the four types of samādhi encompass all practices entirely, they are called "general"; because the buddha-mindfulness samādhi is one practice among all practices, it is called "specific"; though general and specific differ, neither fails to be a wondrous practice. Moreover, because all four types of samādhi generally contemplate the Buddha, they are called "general"; but speaking solely of buddha-mindfulness highlights a single practice, so it is called "specific"; hence the \*Stations of Mindfulness\* states: "All four contemplate the Buddha." It is only in following the distinction among teachings that what is contemplated differs; thus it is called "specific." The preceding three teachings each contemplate one body—namely, the manifest, response, or reward \[body\]; the perfect \[teaching\] contemplates the dharma-body, which is fully endowed with all bodies. Furthermore, because the four types of samādhi run through the four teachings, it is again called "general." Some people alter this, claiming that the four types of samādhi are specific while buddha-mindfulness is general; they have not missed the general meaning, but why should one needlessly contradict the text?
