> Regarding curing by contemplating the mind, it is also like the Great Master of Nanyue, who suffered from dropsical fullness, but by using the power of contemplation to investigate it, the illness dissolved and was cured. Next, in explaining arts and techniques, mundane cures are used first. Regarding 'like the method of curing hiccups', the first version says: 'By frightening them, it is immediately cured. The Saṃyuktāgama says: "Applying the mind and breath too urgently; also, the sleeping place being meager, due to external wind and cold, the stomach canal and kidneys are stirred and surge upward to block the chest; water flows segment by segment and lodges in the chest, which is called hiccups; it must be urgently cured." The curing methods are extensive as in the sūtra, and so forth.' Regarding 'like the method of curing toothache', the first version says: 'Facing the Northern Dipper, incant: "Teeth and molars ache, the Northern Dipper cures them. When the pain is cured, one knows it of oneself." The pain is immediately cured. Also, taking a dog's tooth from yin ground to yang ground, incant: "Let the person's toothache be cured. If not cured, I will expose you to the sun; if cured, return to your original state." The pain is immediately cured.' Regarding 'like pinching the thumb to cure the liver' and so on, it is because the five fingers govern the five viscera. The thumb governs the liver, the index finger governs the lungs, the middle finger governs the heart, the ring finger governs the spleen, and the little finger governs the kidneys. Next, in the application, yāo (邀) is also read as yāo (邀, sound jü-yáo). As for why the dhāraṇī is not translated, as in the Lotus Commentary, it is not translated because of the conditions of the four siddhāntas. Here the text mostly carries the intent of counteracting. Regarding 'commanding the inhalation and exhalation, saying', using the mouth to give the command to recite this dhāraṇī, one must still command it, saying 'ānāpāna'. Regarding 'striking hard forty or fifty times', it is to cause the mind to halt at the painful spot. For instance, when people of the Jiangnan region suffer a sudden ailment, they all strike the arm with their hands up to one or two hundred times, and the ailment is immediately cured. Next, in explaining harm and benefit: sharp mind and mild illness brings sudden benefit; sharp mind and severe illness brings gradual benefit; dull mind and mild illness brings gradual harm; dull mind and severe illness brings sudden harm. Furthermore, even if one's mind is dull, if one skillfully understands the method of contemplation, one can also attain gradual or sudden accomplishment among the benefits.
