> 2. Signs of the manifestation of the wholesome roots of the contemplation of impurity. If the practitioner is in the concentration of the unarrived stage of the desire realm, within this concentration body and mind are empty and tranquil, and one suddenly sees the deceased bodies of other men and women—having died, they are swollen, decomposed, with maggots and pus flowing forth; seeing the white bones scattered in disarray, one's mind feels sorrow and joy, feeling revulsion toward what was loved. This is the signs of the manifestation of the wholesome roots of the nine notions. Or within quiet concentration, one suddenly sees impurity in one's internal body and swelling and disarray in external bodies, and the white bones of one's own body supporting each other joint by joint from head to foot. Having seen this matter, the concentrated mind is secure and stable, startled into awakening to impermanence, feeling revulsion toward the five desires, without attachment to self or other. This is the signs of the manifestation of the wholesome roots of the renunciations. Or within the concentrated mind, one sees in the internal body and external bodies, all flying birds, running beasts, clothing, food and drink, houses, mountains, and forests, that they are all impure. This is the signs of the manifestation of the wholesome roots of the great impurity.
