They also cause various annoyances to harass the practitioner—either like bugs and scorpions crawling on the person's head and face, drilling and stinging sharply; or striking and tickling under the person's armpits; or suddenly embracing the person; or making noisy, clamorous spoken sounds; as well as making the shapes of various beasts—manifold strange appearances, coming to harass the practitioner. One should immediately recognize them, close one's eyes with a focused mind, and scold them inwardly, saying these words: 'I now recognize you! You are a tula-kṛtya in Jambudvīpa who eats fire and foul scents, holding deviant views and delighting in breaking the precepts! I now observe the precepts and will never fear you!' If one is a monastic, one should recite the prātimokṣa; if one is a householder, one should recite the three refuges, the five precepts, and so forth. The ghost will then step backward and crawl away.
