> Third is afflictions by demons (Māra). These demons mostly manifest transformations of three kinds of sensory states of the five sense objects to destroy one's wholesome mind: First, creating circumstances contrary to one's desires, where frightening five sense objects cause one to feel fear. Second, creating circumstances agreeable to one's desires, where lovely five sense objects cause one's mind to become attached. Third, creating circumstances neither contrary nor agreeable, where ordinary five sense objects agitate the practitioner. Therefore, Māra is called the 'Killer'; he is also called 'Flower Arrow'; he is also called 'Five Arrows', because he shoots at humanity's five passions. Within name-and-form he creates various objects to bewilder the practitioner. As for creating agreeable objects: he may manifest parents, siblings, images of Buddhas, or handsome men and women in delightful circumstances to make one's mind attached. As for creating contrary objects: he may manifest the forms of tigers, wolves, lions, or rākṣasas, various terrifying images, to frighten the practitioner. As for creating circumstances neither contrary nor agreeable: they are ordinary matters that agitate people's minds and cause them to lose dhyāna-concentration; hence he is called Māra. Or he may produce various pleasant and unpleasant sounds, produce various fragrant and foul odours, produce various good and bad tastes, or produce various painful and pleasurable objects to touch a person's body—all these are demonic affairs. Their marks are numerous, and will not be fully stated now. To summarize: if they produce various five sense objects to afflict and perturb a person, causing one to lose wholesome dharmas and give rise to various afflictions, they are all the armies of Māra. This is because they can destroy the impartial Buddha-Dharma and cause greed, sorrow, anger, torpor, and other obstacles to the Path to arise. As stated in a sūtra verse:
