Because there are such difficult matters as these, when Māra enters a person's mind, he can drive the practitioner's mind and spirit into madness, either joyful or sorrowful, thereby causing disease and leading to death. Or at times he may cause one to attain various deviant dhyāna-concentrations, wisdom, supernormal powers, and dhāraṇīs, so that one preaches the Dharma to teach and transform others, and people all believe and submit, but later he destroys the mundane and supramundane wholesome deeds of others and ruins the correct Dharma. Such various anomalies are manifold and cannot be fully spoken of. Now their essentials are briefly indicated so that practitioners in seated meditation will not falsely accept various states. To put it concisely: if one wishes to dispel the deviant and return to the correct, one should contemplate the true mark of all dharmas and cultivate calming and contemplation well; there is no deviance that cannot be shattered. Thus the commentary (\*Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa\*) states: 'Apart from the true mark of all dharmas, all else is demonic affairs.'
