> When a practitioner settles the mind to cultivate the Path, perhaps the four great elements fall ill: because of newly applying contemplation, mind and breath agitate each other, setting off underlying illnesses; or at times one is unable to harmonize well the three matters of body, breath, and mind, so that there are transgressions internally and externally, hence illnesses occur. As for the method of seated meditation: if one can apply the mind well, the four hundred and four illnesses will naturally be cured; if one applies the mind wrongly, the four hundred and four illnesses will arise because of it. Therefore, whether practicing for oneself or transforming others, one should recognize well the source of illnesses, and know well the methods for curing illnesses within the mind during seated meditation. Once illness is stirred up, not only is the practice of the Path obstructed, but there is also concern that one's very life may be lost.
