> First, explaining the marks of illnesses arising: Although the arising of illnesses has many paths, briefly speaking they do not exceed two kinds: The first is the marks of illness from the increase or decrease of the four great elements. If the earth element increases, then swellings, knots, heaviness, and bodily emaciation appear; such one hundred and one afflictions arise. If the water element increases, then phlegm, fluid retention, distension, indigestion, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and so forth—one hundred and one afflictions arise. If the fire element increases, then chills and high fevers, pain in all joints, bad breath, obstruction of urine and stool, and so forth—one hundred and one afflictions arise. If the wind element increases, then the body feels suspended in emptiness, trembling, pain, chest tightness and shortness of breath, vomiting and panting; such one hundred and one afflictions arise. Thus a sūtra says: 'When one great element is out of harmony, one hundred and one illnesses arise. When the four great elements are out of harmony, four hundred and four illnesses all stir at once.' The arising of illnesses of the four great elements each has its marks, which should be examined during sitting and in dreams.
