If one cultivates the six supernormal knowledges, they do not emerge without dhyāna; therefore a sūtra states: "Deeply cultivate dhyāna-concentration, and obtain the five supernormal knowledges." If one wishes to sever afflictions, one cannot be wise without dhyāna. Giving rise to wisdom from dhyāna, one can sever the fetters. Wisdom without concentration is like a lamp in the wind.
