> Furthermore, dhyāna refers to the four dhyānas; ordinary persons, non-Buddhists, followers of the two vehicles, bodhisattvas, and all Buddhas equally attain this concentration, hence it is called shared. Pāramitā means "crossing over without limit"; this belongs exclusively to bodhisattvas and all Buddhas. Because of dhyāna, they can penetrate the Buddha-nature of the Middle Way, produce the nine kinds of great dhyāna, and attain great nirvāṇa, which is not shared with ordinary persons or the two vehicles; thus pāramitā is called unshared. Speaking broadly, there is no need for distinction. Why is this? Dhyāna in itself has shared dhyāna and unshared dhyāna; pāramitā is also like this, having shared and unshared. Therefore the Mahāyāna Treatise states: "In Indian linguistic grammar, whenever an undertaking is finished, it is called pāramitā."
