> At that time, they should again steady the mind, from head to foot and from foot to head, carefully contemplating along the body, deeply refining the white bones through perhaps hundreds of thousands of repetitions. The tendons and flesh of the skeleton being completely gone, the color of the bones is like mother-of-pearl or conch shell. Contemplating deeply without ceasing, they immediately see bright, sparkling white light upon the bones. Having seen this mark, they should then carefully contemplate between the eyebrows; as they contemplate, they also see white light blazing brightly, all converging toward the mind. The practitioner does not grasp at the marks of light, but merely steadies the mind between the eyebrows. If the mind remains tranquil and abides naturally of itself, with virtuous roots developing, they will see light of eight colors emerging and rotating between the eyebrows, shining everywhere across the ten directions, all utterly luminous and pure. The eight colors are earth, water, fire, wind, blue, yellow, red, and white. Illumining the great earth everywhere, they see the color of earth like yellow and white pure earth; they see the color of water like clear, settled water in an abyss; they see the color of fire like pure fire with smokeless fuel; they see the color of wind like dust-free pure wind; they see the color of blue like a mountain of refined gold; they see the color of yellow like campaka flowers; they see the color of red like the clouds of a spring morning; they see the color of white like mother-of-pearl or snow. In accordance with these marks of color, all have radiance. Although form is seen distinctly, no substantial matter is to be found; these forms are transcendent and superior, not possessed by the mundane world. When this mark manifests, the practitioner's mind is steady and secure, and joy and pleasure are immeasurable, beyond what words can record.
