> Answer: The sūtras' explanations differ, and there are distinctions between light and heavy offenses, so no fixed determination can be made. Now, only to state the essentials: signs do not exceed four kinds: first, seeing signs in dreams; second, when walking the path, hearing a voice in space, or seeing unusual marks and various wondrous portents; third, while sitting, witnessing signs of good, evil, breaking the precepts, keeping the precepts, and so forth; fourth, taking inner realization of various Dharma gates, the unfolding of the mind directed to the path, and so forth as signs. These are judged according to the severity \[of the offense\] and cannot be stated definitively; below, when examining the wholesome and unwholesome root dispositions, they will be briefly set forth again.
