> First, explaining cessation in terms of practice has many paths, but now we briefly present three points: first, cessation by fixing on conditions; second, cessation by restraining the mind; third, cessation by embodying the real. The reason all are called cessation (zhi) is that zhi means restraining (zhizhi) and also putting an end to (zhixi). When the mind arises, one restrains it so that it does not flow away; hence it is called restraint. Focusing the mind and steadying the resolve to put an end to all distracting thoughts is called cessation. Now, "cessation by fixing on conditions" means tying the mind to places such as the bridge of the nose or the navel, not letting it race about; hence it is called cessation by fixing on conditions. "Cessation by restraining the mind" means that if the mind engages in vitarka and vicāra, one restrains it and keeps it from arising; hence it is called cessation by restraining the mind. "Cessation by embodying the real" means realizing that all dharmas are empty and putting an end to all delusive thoughts; hence it is called cessation by embodying the real.
