> Second, concerning the examination and verification of wholesome and unwholesome root-dispositions: when practitioners are able to skillfully cultivate the gate of cessation and quiet various turbulent thoughts, their minds become clear and calm. Because the mind is calm, the wholesome roots from past lives will naturally unfold. If there are no wholesome ones, then various unwholesome phenomena will arise. Therefore, a sūtra says: "First move them with concentration, and later eradicate \[defilements\] with wisdom."
