> 1. As for the arising of benevolence conditioned by sentient beings: within a calm, concentrated mind in the desire realm or the anāgamya stage, the mind suddenly gives rise to benevolent remembrance of sentient beings, first taking as its object the sign of dear ones attaining happiness. Thereby absorption arises, peaceful and joyful, extending to neutral persons and enemies who are all seen attaining happiness, without anger or resentment, without enmity or vexation, vast and immeasurable, pervading the ten directions. These are the signs of the arising of the wholesome roots of benevolence conditioned by sentient beings. Or compassion conditioned by sentient beings arises, and similarly up to joy and equanimity.
