> 3. Explaining the arising of the wholesome roots of the twelve links of causes and conditions in a single thought-moment: within a calm, concentrated mind in the desire realm or the anāgamya stage, one suddenly realizes for oneself that the momentary mind has no person and no self, its nature being fundamentally devoid of reality. Why is this? When a single thought-moment arises, it must rely on causes and conditions. Speaking of causes and conditions, it already possesses the twelve links of causes and conditions; since conditions have no intrinsic nature, how could a single thought-moment have fixed reality? If one does not apprehend any reality in a single thought-moment, one thereby shatters perverse clinging to worldly nature. The mind corresponds with correct concentration, and wisdom bursts forth like a gushing spring; body and speech are purified, and one leaves all evil actions behind. These are the signs of the arising of the wholesome roots of the twelve links in a single thought-moment. These twelve links of causes and conditions are also fully discriminated in the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra; one may also, on the basis of these twelve links, explain how a single mind is endowed with the arising of the wholesome roots of the four truths.
