> Second, regarding vitarka and vicāra in a half-clear and half-dim mind: If a person, when collecting thoughts, although feeling that the afflictions of vitarka and vicāra do not rest for a thought-moment, yet in accord with what is conditioned at the time, they are sometimes clear and sometimes dim. When clear, vitarka and vicāra seize conditions, and thoughts do not rest; when dim, there is indeterminate staring blankly, without any awareness or understanding. This is called the mark of the manifestation of vitarka and vicāra in a half-clear and half-dim \[mind\].
