> Answer: Because there are distinct curative methods during meditation, their signs must be spoken of separately. If a practitioner wishes to cultivate dhyāna and an affliction happens to arise, they should skillfully know its causes. The arising of these three kinds of illness is generally stirred up by internal or external factors. If there is external injury from cold, heat, or wind, or carelessness in food and drink, and the illness arises from the three places, one should know it arises due to external factors. If mental application is unregulated, contemplation and practice are deviant and improper, or internal mental dharmas arise and one does not know how to rest and nourish oneself, thereby causing illness to arise from these three places, this arises due to internal factors.
