> Fourth, the penetration category: when someone attains the first dhyāna, within this absorption they immediately give rise to the undefiled state \[free from the defilements\] of views and thought and reach nirvāṇa. Penetration also has two kinds: first, naturally penetrating on its own; second, penetrating only through cultivating contemplation. Furthermore, within these four categories of absorption, there are again four kinds of people whose faculties and dispositions differ, as in the four within the retrogression category: first, those with retrogression-retrogression attainment, gradually retrogressing through the nine grades until they lose it entirely; second, those with retrogression-stability attainment, retrogressing from the nine grades down to the eighth or seventh grade and then remaining stable without losing it; third, those with retrogression-progression attainment, retrogressing from the nine grades down to the eighth or seventh grade, or even down to the first grade, and from that first grade advancing again; fourth, those with retrogression-penetration attainment, having retrogressed from the nine grades back to the eighth, seventh, or down to the first grade, suddenly giving rise to genuine undefiledness in the midst of it. The remaining stability category, progression category, and penetration category each have four meanings in the same way. In this, some retrogress due to the obstacle of negligence, while others stabilize, progress, or penetrate due to the purity of repentance; these points are numerous and cannot be explained exhaustively.
