> First, as for the marks of the coarse settled mind: by cultivating the various expedient means of the breath path as previously described, the mind gradually becomes empty and cohesive and no longer projects upon thoughts; this is called coarse settlement. As for the marks of the subtle settled mind: subsequently, that mind becomes imperceptibly and progressively finer; this is the subtle settled mind. When attaining this coarse or subtle settlement, or when about to attain it, a dharma of sustaining the body will certainly arise. When this dharma manifests, body and mind become naturally upright and straight, sitting without fatigue, as if something were holding up the body. If it is a good sustaining of the body, it merely gently supports the body's strength. If it is a coarse sustaining of the body, it is stiff, tense, and rigid: when it arrives, it is painfully tight and rigid; when it departs, it is limp and wears out the person. This is not a good dharma. Once the mind is subtle, the noticing mind is naturally bright and pure, corresponding with concentration. The concentration dharma sustains the mind so that it is spontaneously unmoving. Progressing from shallow to deep, it may last for a single sitting without distracted thought; therefore, this is named desire-realm concentration. When entering this concentration, it is because the marks of the desire-realm retribution body are not yet exhausted.
