> Answer: As with the distinction between vitarka and vicāra above, so it is now with prīti and sukha. Coarse pleasure is called prīti; subtle pleasure is called sukha. One may also say that coarse joy is prīti and subtle joy is sukha. Furthermore, although prīti and sukha are both aspects of delight, the two aspects differ: it is called prīti because it is associated with the faculty of joy (saumanasyendriya); it is called sukha because it is associated with the faculty of pleasure (sukhendriya). It is called prīti because the mind leaps with joy; it is called sukha because the mind is tranquil. Furthermore, when the practitioner first takes pleasure as an object and joy arises in their mind before they have yet experienced the pleasure, it is called prīti; subsequently, when the feeling of excitement subsides and one delights oneself with pleasure, it is called sukha. For example, when a hungry person receives food, at first they are joyful before they have tasted its flavor, which is called prīti; later, when they eat it and only then experience the pleasure within the flavor, this is called sukha. Moreover, just as the third dhyāna has sukha but lacks prīti, one knows that the two faculties differ.
