> Second, explaining whether there are factors or no factors: other sūtras and treatises, in explaining the four formless absorptions, generally do not establish factors. Only the Yingluo jing states: 'In the four formless absorptions, five factors serve as the cause, and the sixth, the silent mind, is the absorption's essence, because the paths of expedient means are identical and their essence and function are similar.' If one relies on what is stated in the Yingluo, the space absorption indeed has five factors. As for the five factors, as the sūtra says: '1. ideation; 2. guarding; 3. correctness; 4. contemplation; 5. ekāgratā.' However, while the four dhyānas mentioned above all have discernible features of their factors, now this space absorption has no separately realized distinct dharmas as factors. This is probably based on the expedient means for cultivating space, conventionally establishing them as factors. Thus the sūtra states: 'Because the paths of expedient means are identical and their essence and function are similar.' That other sūtras and treatises all do not establish factors must be because their own essence lacks the marks of completing separately realized limbs and branches; that the Yingluo speaks of having factors is mostly based on expedient means and formulated according to principle.
