> First, as for explaining the names: what are called the six subtle gates are: (1) counting; (2) following; (3) stopping; (4) contemplation; (5) turning back; and (6) purification. They are collectively called the six subtle gates because "subtle" is a name for nirvāṇa; these subtle dharmas can lead through to nirvāṇa, so they are called subtle gates, and also called the six subtle gates. Among these six subtle gates, three are concentration dharmas and three are wisdom dharmas. Concentration embraces and wisdom urges on; they are both defiled and undefiled—the meaning lies herein.
