> Furthermore, the practitioner focuses the mind with single-mindedness upon the breath, causing the mind not to scatter and gaining entry into dhyāna absorption, which is therefore called 'also \[possessing\] craving'; awakening to impermanence is therefore called 'also \[possessing\] spurring'; corresponding with absorption is called 'also \[possessing\] the defiled'; reflective contemplation without attachment is called 'also \[possessing\] the undefiled.' Furthermore, if during counting of the breath one counts with an obscured mind, lacking illumination, then later when realizing absorption, the mind sees nothing. Now, one who follows the breath illuminates the breath with a clear mind; later when realizing absorption, the eye of the mind opens in clarity, seeing the thirty-six bodily components, destroying craving, views, and conceit. This is precisely how the sublime practices surpass counting the breath.
