> First, explaining the purpose of the scriptural teaching: When the disciples of the Buddha are in an araṇya—an empty house, among graves, in a mountain forest, or in an open wilderness—they skillfully cultivate the external impurity of the nine notions, loathe and detest their bodies, and generate this thought: 'How can I drag along this lowest, impure bag of foul feces and urine with me?' At that time, trembling in panic and terror, the hairs on their bodies stand on end; and evil Māra manifests various forms and colours to frighten them, intending to make their path regress and disappear. For this reason, one recollects the Buddha.
