> Next are the four notions beginning with the notion of the foulness of food; these are taught as four kinds of contemplation of specific phenomena to aid in perfecting correct contemplation and severing the delusions of thought, for the sake of srotāpannas and sakṛdāgāmins entering the path of cultivation who wish to sever the five lower fetters and realize the fruit of anāgāmin. The subsequent three notions of abandonment, dispassion, and cessation are taught for anāgāmins progressing toward the arhat fruit who cultivate the path of the adept, wishing to sever and abandon attachment to the form and formless realms and realize the arhat fruit. One should know that the sequential stages of the ten notions are distinguished with reference to the three paths, and their general meaning can thus be seen.
