> Answer: The sūtra says, "The triple realm has no separate dharmas; it is made solely by the one mind." It also says, "The mind is like a master painter, able to paint the various five skandhas"; "In all the worlds, there is nothing that is not made from the mind." Therefore we know that the mind is the root of the two rivers and the source of the myriad things. Yet now, it is simply because all students of dhyāna and wisdom do not know how to contemplate the mind to eliminate the root of the illness of defilements—just as if one wishes to fell a tree by lopping off the branches without clearing its roots, so that its growth never ceases; or just as when repairing a dike, one does not plug its holes, so that the leaking never stops; or just as a foolish dog chases the clod without knowing to chase the person, so that the clods never cease. The various analogies are clear, and therefore it is delineated with respect to the mind; the sūtra says, "Being able to contemplate the nature of the mind is called the supreme concentration."
