> The Treatise says: 'Asking: contemplating the spontaneously arising mind, / How is it nirvāṇa? / Cultivating the four kinds of samādhi, / One attains the true forbearance of non-arising.' This is the fourth verse, explaining that if one wishes to contemplate the spontaneously arising mind in a single thought-moment to obtain its theoretical realization, one must cultivate it by relying on the models and guidelines of the four kinds of samādhi. Hence the sūtra says, 'Again, I see the sons of the Buddha cultivating various practices to seek the Buddha path.' 'Various practices' are precisely the four kinds of samādhi; because their cultivation is not the same, they are called 'various'. Speaking of these four: first, constantly sitting samādhi; second, constantly walking; third, half-walking and half-sitting; fourth, neither walking nor sitting. As for the term samādhi, it is called harmonized and upright concentration. The Dazhidulun says, 'The good mind abiding in one place without moving is called samādhi.' The Great Sūtra says, 'Binding the mind to a single object is called samādhi.'
