> Tenth, explaining not giving rise to dharma-attachment conforming to the path: Having passed through the various internal and external obstacles above, one ought to enter the true, yet one does not enter; this is certainly because there is dharma-attachment and abiding attachment, so that one cannot enter. A sūtra says: 'The Dharma is named non-defilement; if one is defiled by dharmas, up to and including nirvāṇa, this is defiled attachment, not seeking the Dharma. The Dharma is named non-abiding; if one abides in dharmas, this is abiding in dharmas, not seeking the Dharma.' The Abhidharma says: 'At the warmth stage there is still retrogression. If a person at the peak stage gives rise to dharma-attachment, when they ought to enter they cannot enter, and retrogress into the four grave offenses and five heinous sins.' Both the shared and distinct teachings have the meaning of falling from the peak. The Da zhidu lun says: 'The three samādhis are stages of semblance path; when the true has not yet manifested, one easily develops dharma-attachment, which is called falling from the peak.' Practitioners of today will not reach this point in ten thousand cases; if there is one who does, they should carefully protect themselves. At this stage there are no internal or external obstacles; there is only dharma-attachment. Dharma-attachment is difficult to sever; if one lingers here, this is no small matter. If there is no dharma-attachment, one naturally flows into the ocean of sarvajñā, and all embodiments of wisdom do not depend on awakening through another; this person's merit can only be known by a buddha. Thus, these ten dharmas guide and show the practitioner the path of practice, and their advancement reaches up to this point; the merits entered into thereafter are not what is discussed now.
