> First, the factor of equanimity. Departing from joy without regret: this mind is named equanimity. When the practitioner wishes to depart from the second dhyāna, they reproach joy through various causes and conditions. Once joy has ceased and passed away, the third dhyāna immediately arises. When verifying the bliss of the third dhyāna, one abandons the joy of the second dhyāna without generating a mind of regret; therefore it is named equanimity. It is also said that when the bliss of the third dhyāna first arises, this bliss is foremost in the three realms and can generate mental attachment; if the mind becomes attached, the dhyāna is ruined, and thus one must practice equanimity.
