> First is the gate of counting breaths. Gathering the mind on the breath, from one to ten, is called 'counting'. In order to cultivate the untainted true Dharma, the practitioner must first regulate the mind to enter meditative absorption. The coarse distraction of the desire realm is difficult to rein in, and without counting it cannot be cured; therefore, one must skillfully regulate the body and breath. Counting from one to ten, coarse turbulence settles into calm and the mental spirit comes to rest; this is the essential requirement for entering meditative absorption, and therefore counting breaths is taken as a marvelous gate.
