> Sixth is the gate of purification. The mind having nothing to rely upon and false waves not arising is called purification. When the practitioner cultivates returning, although he can break through the inverted views of contemplation, if true illumination has not yet arisen and he abides in the absence of subject and object, this is still the notion of reception, which therefore causes the wisdom of the mind to be defiled and turbid. Having become aware of this, he does not abide and does not attach; quietly and distinctly pure, true illumination consequently unfolds from this, whereupon he severs the fetters and latent defilements of the three realms and realizes the path of the three vehicles. Thus it is said: “One whose purification attains one mind—ten thousand evils are thereby extinguished.” That purification is taken as a gate—the meaning lies in this.
