> 12. Contemplating impermanence. When one who cultivates the superior stages leaves the third dhyāna and enters the fourth dhyāna, one constantly cultivates contemplative illumination; therefore, when the immovable concentration of the fourth dhyāna arises, one naturally contemplates and comprehends that the mind and consciousness within concentration are illusory, arising and ceasing thought-moment by thought-moment; hence it is called 'contemplating impermanence.' Correlated with the bases of mindfulness, from here there are five superior stages, all belonging to the contemplation of mindfulness of phenomena.
