> The explanation of the twofold emptiness of persons and dharmas following the four noble truths and sixteen aspects is to clarify that although śrāvakas are said to enter the path generally through the teachings of the Tripiṭaka, since the teachings of the Tripiṭaka have the distinction of the two emptinesses, one knows that those who cultivate the four noble truths and sixteen aspects must also differ. Therefore, the Abhidharma attains the path by seeing existence, while the \*Tattvasiddhi\* (\*Chengshi\*) becomes a noble one by verifying emptiness; these differences are all based on the teachings of the two emptinesses. Now, in order to distinguish the differences among those who cultivate the four noble truths and sixteen aspects, the twofold emptiness of persons and dharmas is explained next. 'Emptiness' is universally spoken of because emptiness has the meaning of nonexistence: the nonexistence of these two kinds of existence—sentient beings and dharmas—is therefore called 'emptiness'.
