> First, possessing the notion of form internally, one externally contemplates forms. 'Possessing the notion of form internally' means not destroying internal forms and not annihilating the characteristics of internal forms. 'Externally contemplating forms' means not destroying external forms and not annihilating the characteristics of external forms. Contemplating external forms with this mind of impurity is because, in order to cultivate radiant light, one should not destroy or annihilate the internal skeleton in the first liberation; and because latent defilements of the desire realm are difficult to sever, one must contemplate external forms with a mind of impurity. This first liberation is situated in the first dhyāna; because it can cast off oneself, others, and the lower plane, it is called liberation.
