### [3.165](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1925.3.165)

> As for explaining great benevolence and great compassion next after the eighteen unshared attributes: because the Buddhas, having attained dharmas such as the eighteen unshared attributes, constantly dwell in great benevolence and compassion, the power of their wholesome roots of benevolence universally perfumes their three karmic actions, manifesting everywhere in the worlds of the ten directions to perform Buddha works and benefit all beings; therefore, they are explained next. Although the names of benevolence and compassion are the same as those in the four immeasurables, their essences are distinct and cannot be categorized together; hence, it is only upon reaching the ultimate fruit that they receive the designation of 'great.'
