Fourth, mindfulness of dharmas: the two skandhas of perception and formations and the three unconditioned dharmas are called dharmas. Within this, the wisdom that contemplates dharmas is called 'mindfulness'. Penetrating that in all dharmas, a self and what belongs to a self are completely unattainable, and therefore there is no self, to shatter the inversion of self, is 'basis'. Contemplating external dharmas and internal-and-external dharmas is also like this. This is the mindfulness of dharmas. When the sūtras of the śrāvakas explain the bases of mindfulness, they only speak of shattering the four inversions as the bases of mindfulness. When the Mahāyāna explains the bases of mindfulness, it speaks of shattering the eight inversions as the bases of mindfulness. Thus the \*Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra\* says: 'If one can deeply contemplate the four bases of mindfulness, this is sitting in the place of awakening.'
