First, the Śūraṅgama samādhi. Regarding the Śūraṅgama samādhi: Śūraṅgama is rendered in the language of Qin as 'heroic characteristic'; it analyzes and knows the quantity, depth, and shallowness of the active characteristics of all samādhis, just as a great general knows the strength and numbers of his troops. When a bodhisattva attains this samādhi, none among the māras of afflictions and the people of Māra can destroy them. For example, wherever the wheel-turning sage king's jewel general who commands the army arrives, none can destroy or subdue him; therefore, it is called the 'heroic characteristic samādhi'.
